BLACKWOOD – This year will mark the 49th annual Student Art Show at Camden County College. The show will open April 13 and run until May 13 in the Marlin Art Gallery on the Blackwood campus.

“The opening night event (on April 13), you get to meet all the artists and you get to see all their pieces of art,” said Kassandra Huerta, who is in her second year as gallery director. “The party really starts the day of the opening reception. We got the free food, music, and that’s the day that we hand out the rewards to the students.”

Eleven rewards will be handed out on opening night. The prizes include best of show, best of photography and honorable mentions.

“The art show is a big help for the students because it helps add to their portfolio and will really aid them when they want to get into the art school of their choice,” said Huerta. “The attendance … really varies, but there are probably about 100 people that come to the opening night event. It really is a fun time.”

Any type of visual art, such as pictures, paintings and sculptures, can be submitted for the show. All pieces must go through a process to be selected to be shown in the gallery, Huerta said

“The amount of pieces displayed depends on the class sizes. We allow both semesters to put in art, as long as they are in a visual arts class,” said Huerta. “We easily get 100 entries into the gallery, and every student can enter three pieces of their recent work.”

The artist’s reception on opening night will take place from 5 to 7 p.m. April 13 in the gallery in Lincoln Hall. The gallery will be open from 1 to 3 p.m. Monday to Thursday for the show. Admission is free.
