Students sing at karaoke event

BLACKWOOD – More than 20 students participated in a karaoke event Nov. 19 at Camden County College. More than 100 students gathered to listen to their fellow classmates sing their favorite tunes.

Among the performers was Jasmira Lewis, a first-year music major at CCC, who dazzled the crowed with her rendition of “If I Ain’t Got You” by Alicia Keys.

Also performing were Jennifer Kane and friend Jacob Dougherty. The duo sang country song “Play It Again” by Luke Bryan.

“It’s a country song that we do a good rendition of,” said Kane, a third-year student at CCC, noting she was nervous about the performance. “I’m nervous partly because I don’t know anyone here.”

Dougherty, also a first-year student at CCC, said participating was not only a way to showcase his talent, but to spread the importance of music.

“Music has always been a part of my life and I just want to get that message out there saying that music is important,” Dougherty said.

While some students reluctantly joined in the fun and one student was removed for using profane language, one student acted as if he could not get enough of the fun. Michael Wilkins, a second-year student at CCC, sang four times at the event. Wilkins was also the first person to sing.

“I did it last year too. You get to sing your favorite song and get to show everyone. It’s fun,” Wilkins said.

Of all the songs he sang, Wilkins said his favorite song to perform was “No One” by Alicia Keys.
