For the second consecutive year, three Camden County College students swept the awards for web projects for two-year colleges in the New Jersey College Newspaper Contest sponsored by the New Jersey Press Foundation.
DEIDRA MARBLEY
Deidra Marbley won first place, Alex La Rosa won second place and Martha Robles won third place for their projects in the 2017-18 contest. The students produced the projects for communication class assignments and for publication on CCC Times, the online source for news produced by students for students at Camden County College. The projects combined text, photos and graphics to tell stories.
The New Jersey Press Foundation announced the awards in March and will present them to the students at its spring conference and awards ceremony on April 14.
Marbley won first place for Meet Tate. In the project, Tate Potts, a transgender student at Camden County College, shares the story of how he began his new life as a college student and a man.
Marbley, who works two jobs and attends Camden County College part time, said she enjoyed writing the story. “I am proud of my work and accomplishment of being the contest winner,” she stated.

ALEX LA ROSA
La Rosa won second place for Love, school and hard work: Dennix Alicea’s life. The project describes the experiences of Dennix Alicea as a criminal justice student at Camden County College, hospital security guard, recreational athlete, big brother and godfather.
“I was in shock that I won,” La Rosa said, adding she was glad the contest judges considered her work worthy of recognition.

MARTHA ROBLES
Robles won third place for Keeping His Culture Alive. The project portrays the efforts of a Mexican native to keep his culture alive after moving to the United States.
“I enjoyed the project very much and enjoyed writing about the growing Mexican culture in the U.S.,” Robles said, adding she didn’t believe she would win an award in the contest.

Camden County College students also swept the awards for web projects for two-year colleges in the 2016-17 New Jersey College Newspaper Contest and won first place and third place in the 2015-16 contest.
