With the presidential election approaching on Nov. 5, Camden County College students discuss their perspectives on plans by Kamala Harris and Donald J. Trump to make health care more affordable and accessible to Americans.

Harris, the Democratic vice president, is campaigning on plans to make health care affordable, expand the Affordable Care Act, lower health insurance premiums and remove medical debt from credit reports. Trump, the Republican former president, is campaigning on plans to expand health care with transparency and affordability and to eliminate the Affordable Care Act.

Kawanda Morton, a second-year nursing student at CCC, said she agrees with Harris’ position to make health care accessible and affordable to all Americans. “Health care should be a universal thing and should be accessible and affordable to all,” she stated.

Morton, a former employee at a government-funded clinic, Project Hope, said she understands firsthand that health care is not always accessible and affordable to low-income residents. “Project Hope took grants and provided treatment for women and men without insurance that would’ve been denied or obtained high hospital bills.”

Tyona Jackson, a first-year student, said she is one of the few Americans not covered by medical insurance. “When I became of age, I was taken off my parents’ insurance,” Jackson stated. “I want something that is affordable for me as a college student but also when I graduate.”
