BLACKWOOD – Some Camden County College students express concerns about the college’s theater program, saying they believe it is shrinking. Others say they do not notice a difference.
Isabella Lieberman, 19, a student at CCC for two years, recently said she has seen a decline in the theater program. “A lot of things have been postponed, such as ‘Charlotte’s Web’ (a show now scheduled for this year) since the technical director dropped out. The budget is small and was moved from Dennis Flyer to the Little Theatre.”
The Dennis Flyer Theater has 660 seats and the Little Theatre has 80. This year, the students will stage one show. Last year, students staged two shows.
About “Charlotte’s Web” Lieberman said, “The show did not have enough publicity and not many people auditioned. I feel as though Camden County isn’t well known for their theater department so it was not put out there enough. Regardless, Moxy (Marjorie Sokoloff) is a great director and great with everything she does.”
Julia Nelson, 21, a student at CCC for one year, stated, “I feel like it’s not a lot of the same people that are currently involved. It’s a bit harder to get people to join the theater. We are doing well at the moment but every theater program has its ups and downs.”
Hunter Bolton, 19, a student at CCC for two years, has participated in theater for one year. Bolton said, “Being involved in theater at CCC offers good ways to explore theater for life. I learned a lot in terms of what I can do and how to work with other people. As someone who didn’t take theater classes in high school, I am appreciative of them.”
Aviv Benon, 26, a student at CCC for seven years and a participant in the theater program for one semester, said he has not noticed a decline in the theater program. “I enjoy it. The people are nice and the faculties are adequate.”
