BLACKWOOD – A variety of genres of music will fill the Dennis Flyer Memorial Theater at Camden County College during a concert on April 15.
Audience members will hear jazz, blues, classical, rock, bluegrass and folk when Jake Shimabukuro plays his custom-made four-string tenor ukulele that evening.
Shimabukuro was born in Honolulu. At the age of 4 he first experienced his first instrument. His mother gave him a ukulele. He gained most of his attention in Hawaii, where he released his first album in 1998. At that time he was with a group called Pure Heart, a trio with Lopaka Colon (percussion) and Jon Yamasato (guitar).
He made a name for himself when Pure Heart released two albums, “Pure Heart” and “Pure Heart 2.” He has had a solo career since leaving the group in 2001. He released his first DVD, “Play Loud Ukulele,” and composed the music to the Japanese film “Hula Girls.” He performed with Jimmy Buffett and his group, The Coral Reefer Band, and is featured on Buffett’s DVD release.
