BLACKWOOD – The Camden County Animal Shelter is seeking Camden County College students — and others — to rent a dog.

The Rent-A-Dog program, which began April 25, allows people to take a dog out for one to three hours in the hope of finding the dog a home. The shelter has been promoting the program by hanging flyers on the college campus.

Despite the publicity, several students said recently they weren’t aware of the program.

“I’ve never heard of it, but I’ve definitely always wanted a dog to myself,” said Jerry Johnson, 18, a Sicklerville resident and Camden County College student. “My parents would never let me own one. I will check it out for sure.”

“I never heard of it, but it sounds cool,” said Dan Ljoka, 21, a Haddonfield resident and Camden County College student.

Those wanting to rent a dog must be age 18 or older, have a valid driver’s license, complete a questionnaire and sign a foster care agreement, according to the shelter’s website. They must also go through a dog handling session with staff members and volunteers.

The Camden County Animal Shelter is at 125 County House Road in Blackwood. Those wanting more information about the Rent-A-Dog program should call 856-401-1300 or visit ccasnj.org.
